TOP LEADERSHIP TRENDS FOR 2019

Leadership is not a position or a title, it is action and example. – Cory Booker

The role of a business leader is challenging yet rewarding. Engaged leaders need to stay on top of their game, and great leaders constantly brush up their leadership capabilities by taking proactive steps.  Here are a few leadership trends for 2019 that will not only define leaders but will also influence their company, industry and employees.

Continuous education

Every year, the business world observes a wide array of trends that leave their mark. This has pushed businesses, to stay ready, to adapt to these new trends, when required. This need has given rise to upskilling and leadership programs which enable smart leaders to stand out in a highly competitive environment. As business continues to grow at a faster pace than ever before, every team member needs to be smarter. Only a leader, who is abreast with new skills and technologies, can lead a team efficiently. Continuous learning, including anything from micro-learning sessions to workshops, make this happen.

Welcome Female leadership!

Of the CEOs who lead the companies that make up the 2018 Fortune 500 list, out recently, just 24 are women. That number is down 25 percent from last year’s record-breaking 32 female CEOs, the highest share of women since the Fortune’s first 500 list in 1955. –CNBC

The numbers are troubling, especially in a time when the importance of female leadership is becoming increasingly obvious. Thereby, one of the major leadership and management issues for 2019 would involve efforts to uplift and retain female leaders. It is a well-known fact that companies with good gender diversity among leaders observe greater financial as well as reputational gains as it brings in a more diverse mindset and holistic skillsets to the fore.

Lead several generations

2019 would see a shift of focus from millennials to generation Z. At the same time, many employees frombaby boomers and members of generation X would make their way to companies. Because these age cohorts may have different cultural and economic backgrounds, management styles that work for one age group might not work for another. It will push companies to foster a leadership environment where every group feels valued and motivated to give their best effort.

More collaborative approach

A social transformation which focuses on moving leadership practices from authoritarian to collaborativewill accelerate this year. Leadership practices will see a move from fear based on strength-based, from inquiry to dialogue. It all has given rise to ‘Appreciative Leadership’ – a relational capacity to mobilize potential and convert it into positive power. Appreciative leadership is the new buzz word in the business world. Appreciative leadership concentrates on potential and improves individuals by helping them unearth the best in them.

Company culture First!

There’s no magic formula for great company culture. The key is just to treat your staff how you would like to be treated. – Richard Branson

People talk a lot about work culture, how it should be and why it is not up to the mark. In fact, rather than actually doing anything about it, more energy is spent on talking about the culture. Leaders of any organization significantly drive a company’s culture. 2019 will observe leaders making the culture a core part of the business strategy. Needless to say, every employee will thank them for it!

Lay emphasis on accountability

Remote work has seen a significant increase in the past few years. There is no doubt that remote work lowers overhead cost of organizations, it doesn’t come without challenges. One of the biggest problems revolves around accountability. This year, leaders will begin to understand that they are not only responsible for their teams’ liability but also hold the key to their accountability.

At present, the role of business leaders is complex and challenging. However, if chosen the right path, it can be extremely productive and rewarding. Want to widen your leadership capabilities? Sign up for our tailored courses. For more queries, contact us at team@silverbrookcenter.com.
